Catalogue Note
Mai Trung Thu (1906–1980) belongs to the first generation trained at the École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine in Hanoi, a program that fused academic drawing and Western pictorial disciplines with Vietnamese materials and aesthetics. He later settled in France from the late 1930s, a move closely tied to his refinement of the silk-painting idiom. Mai Trung Thu is celebrated for luminous paintings executed in ink and gouache on silk , typically mounted on paperboard and presented in frames.
