Rectangular, moulded frame with patterned outer profile; glazing present (by reflection), with a modern spacer keeping the painted surface off the glass. Sight size 56 44.5 cm; overall framed size 65 54 cm. The presentation is recent and decorative rather than original.

Identification of the Source Composition

The painted composition derives directly from a celebrated eighteenth–century book illustration by Charles–Dominique–Joseph Eisen (1720–1778), the leading Rococo designer of vignettes for Jean de La Fontaine's Contes et nouvelles en vers ("Tales and Novels in Verse"). Eisen created the original drawing for the tale "L'Ermite" ("The Hermit"), engraved for the 1762–1775 deluxe editions issued by Desaint \ Saillant in Paris. Oil on panel , presented under glazing in a modern frame with MDF dust–cover. From the photographs the support appears planar and stable; no splits, losses of cohesion, or worm channels are visible at sight. The perimeter is hidden by the frame and dust–board, so the panel edges and reverse cannot be directly assessed.
