# Dresden C 1421

## Institutional record and scope

The Dresden drawing C 1421, *Junger Mann mit breitkrempigem Hut an einem Pult*, is a historical comparator, not an established companion to the present sheet. The relevant institutional and catalogue records give a sheet of **183 × 140 mm** and retain qualified institutional language in the Rembrandt-school / Samuel van Hoogstraten orbit. A contradictory `137 × 103 mm` figure in a later client presentation is not supported by the SKD/Ketelsen reference and should not be repeated.

## Relation to the present sheet

**OBSERVED / INFERRED.** The present sheet and Dresden share a general young-man-at-desk motif and some visual conventions. The available visual registration makes RKD—not Dresden—the closer compositional comparator under the selected landmarks. This does not prove that Dresden is independent of the present sheet or RKD; it means the current reproductions do not establish the same degree of close correspondence for that pair.

The following possibilities remain open: common model or arrangement, direct derivation, derivation through a reproduction, generic resemblance, or no direct relation. Neither the Dresden record nor its attribution history adds the present sheet or RKD to its documented group.

The Dresden catalogue discussion of particular irregularities, including the relation of the desktop to the figure's overlong thighs, belongs to C 1421. It neither invalidates the separate present sheet–RKD back observation nor proves that the present sheet selectively corrected, ignored, or copied any Dresden feature. Each proposed contour route must be assessed in its own pair and at the available image quality.

## Reproduction history

The illustrated literature surrounding C 1421 matters because a later copy can derive from a published image rather than an original sheet. The project has verified that historical references and potential earlier illustrations need separate treatment: an identified bibliography is not evidence that a particular plate was inspected or available to a copyist. The directly checked reproduction history must not be overstated as the first possible publication when earlier references remain uninspected.

## Paper and attribution limits

No watermark has been documented in the public record inspected for Dresden. This must not be restated as a demonstrated physical absence on the original, and it does not make a paper relationship impossible. Conversely, no mould, stock, ream, workshop, or date relationship with the present sheet has been demonstrated.

**Next verification:** inspect C 1421 through an institutional image or object-study route; obtain full paper structure and any technical documentation; and distinguish plates actually consulted from bibliographic citations only. Any comparison should preserve the institutional qualifier separately from scholarly proposals.
