Report structure
From the recto the weave reads as a medium plain linen; the paint film is relatively lean in the ground and background, with slightly fuller body in the mantle and flesh. No strong traction cracking is visible; the craquelure is fine and age-consistent. There is no obvious telegraphing of a heavy lining; tension appears even.
All work employed stable, reversible materials and was carried out under magnification: Dry surface cleaning (soft brush, controlled micro-vacuum) followed by adjusted aqueous systems to remove grime films. Reduction/removal of the oxidized natural-resin varnish with tailored solvent gels and free solvents, stopping on safe original paint. Local consolidation of any insecure flakes by capillarity with a thermoplastic conservation resin.
After treatment the palette recovered its intended balance: flesh tones read clear and cool-warm, the rose–violet mantle shows distinct fold structure, and the inscription " Sib.\ Hellespontica.\ VIII " is legible. The paint layer is stable ; craquelure is secure with no tenting or lifting observed. Retouching remains minimal and confined to filled edge losses; it is fully reversible and discreet under normal light.
The closest printed comparator is the Hellespontine plate in Crispijn de Passe's Sibyllarum icones (1601). French publishers (Thomas de Leu; Jacques Granthomme) quickly re-issued the set, often reversing directions and tightening the bust format. In our picture the pose, wheat and held book track that French-mediated variant; see also the hand and eyelid drawing compared to the print details in fig.
A courtly analogue for our bust format is the eight-canvas sibyl group in the Sala del Libro de Oro at the Luxembourg Palace, Paris (traditionally attributed to Philippe de Champaigne and workshop, ca. That cycle follows the Paris print redactions rather than the Cologne first edition, a lineage our canvas appears to share (fig. While the Champaigne heads are more courtly and classicizing, their cool shadowing, lettered titling, and emblematic attributes mirror the rhetoric seen here.
